While most of our members would have heard or even participated in some of the events organised by Academy of Chinese Medicine, Singapore (ACMS), yet many of us may not be very clear about what exactly is the function of ACMS. In this article, we have summarised for you what you need to know about ACMS.
Brief History
First established in October 2015, Academy of Chinese Medicine, Singapore (ACMS) was designated to be the leading academic organization of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) in Singapore, shouldering the mission of promoting TCM continual education to enhance clinical skills of TCM practitioners and encourage more evidence-based research collaborations between TCM and Western medicine for the benefits of public healthcare.
With a vision to be the leading academic organization of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), and the aim of becoming one of the highest authorities on TCM in the world, ACMS currently devotes itself in:
- Promote and disseminate TCM education and knowledge;
- Enhancing the skills of TCM clinical practice so as to safeguard the health of patients;
- Encouraging TCM research and to initiate evidence-based TCM to enhance the efficacy of TCM practice; and
- Facilitating collaboration between TCM and Western Medicine (WM).
Council Structure
The Executive Council comprises of 13 members, of which 7 are Chinese Medicine Practitioners elected from eligible ordinary members, and 6 members who are appointed by Ministry of Health, Ministry of Education and Traditional Chinese Medicine Practitioners Board.
ACMS has been actively involved in providing good quality CPE programs for the TCM industry, touching on topics ranging from legal aspects of practice, to various specialties. One of the more prominent CPE events hosted by ACMS would be “The 10th International Conference on Paediatrics in TCM of WFCMS cum International Conference on Paediatrics in Western and Chinese Medicine”, whereby global paediatrics experts in both TCM and WM come together to share their knowledge and experiences.
Working Committee
ACMS has various working committees that members may join. These committees are involved in organising various activities including CPE programs, major conferences and TCM development in Singapore. These committees are:

- Continuing Professional Education (CPE) Committee
- Academics and Editorial Committee
- Admission Committee
- Publicity Committee
- Youth Wing Committee
- Scientific Advisory Committee

Groups of Specialisation
Members who are interested in developing a particular aspect or topic of TCM may join the specialisation groups in ACMS. These groups are:
- Traditional Chinese Medicine Practitioners’ Consultative Committee
- Gynaecology Group
- Pediatrics Group
- Geriatrics Group
- Dermatology Group
- Acupuncture and Tuina Group
Future plans of ACMS include:
- To award Fellowship to practitioners who have made outstanding contributions to TCM. Collaborate with other TCM organisations to set up criteria for specialisation, and a system of promotion.
- To establish a research fund which will be opened to all TCM or Western Medicine researchers who are interested to do high quality TCM research in Singapore. Provide scholarship or bursary to interested qualifying practitioners to do postgraduate programs.
- To conduct professional TCM continuing education and to publish high quality TCM Journals so as to assert professional status and upgrade clinical skills of our local TCM practitioners.
- Invite overseas or local experts to conduct seminars or conferences on integrative medicine, encourage discussion so as to promote exchanges between TCM and Western medicine practitioners.
- To bridge the local and overseas TCM organisations/institutions and also launch international medical exchanges or cooperation in the field of education, training and research. With these projects, we hope to pave the way to having integrative medicine in Singapore healthcare system in the future.
Membership structure
ACMS membership is open to all Singapore registered TCM practitioners. They may either become an ordinary member or an associate member depending on the degree that they have obtained and their years of practice.
